From Online to Outdoors: Launching Field Trip

After 25 years in marketing and communications, with the last 15 spent working in client relations and travel writing for one of the nation's largest online resources, I realized I wanted to do more than help connect people and brands online. I want to help people reconnect with the real world—the one underfoot, around campfires, and beneath star-lit skies. Field Trip is my answer to that calling, an online resource for all things camping and outdoors. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it's that you don’t need a permission slip to rediscover yourself through nature.

From Digital Marketing to Trailblazing

My years in digital marketing and travel writing were incredible. I helped build brands, crafted stories that inspired families to explore our world, and honed my expertise in creating engaging digital platforms. But the corporate life began to feel too confining for someone who thrives on fresh air and wide-open spaces. So, I'm stepping away (at least partially) from the virtual meetings and data dashboards, trading them for hiking boots and campgrounds.

My goals with Field Trip are simple: help people fall in love with the outdoors (again) and connect them with brands and services that love outdoorsy people—and our planet. I want Field Trip to be the place where people can find inspiration and resources to explore nature responsibly and joyfully.

Launching Field Trip in the Eye of the Storm

Funny enough, Field Trip was truly field-tested just prior to our official launch. As Hurricane Helene hit the western part of Georgia and the Carolinas, my husband and I found ourselves without Wi-Fi or power for six days. Yet, we were far better off than many of our neighbors. Why? Well, for starters, we had each other, our home had no damage, and our loved ones were safe. We were much luckier than many. Our love of camping—with our favorite gear—had taught us how to live quite comfortably, even in less-than-ideal conditions.

With our camping gear at the ready, we set up camp—literally—right in our home. Lanterns, camp stove, solar chargers, you name it. We spent those days reading, doing hurricane clean-up, and connecting with our neighbors. (It really does take a village!) It all felt oddly reassuring and reminded me of the simple joys of slowing down, disconnecting from electronics, and embracing the world right before you.

The experience reinforced what I’ve always believed: having a love for the outdoors can make life more enjoyable and more resilient, even in challenging situations.

A New Chapter in Outdoor Adventure

Field Trip is not just about camping tips or gear recommendations—it’s about helping people find that same sense of comfort and connection within the natural world. Whether you’re a seasoned backpacker or someone looking to take their first overnight trip in the woods, Field Trip is here to inspire you. I want everyone to experience how the outdoors can transform how we live, think, feel, and connect with each other and the Earth.

Remember, you don’t need anyone’s encouragement to get out there and explore. As we say at Field Trip, “No permission slip needed.” But if you'd like a helping hand and guide, let Field Trip be it.
